Billikens Too Much For La Salle

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Alyssa Deno registered a match-high 11 kills, and Saint Louis held La Salle to a .040 attack percentage in a 25-11, 25-18, 25-16 Atlantic 10 Conference victory for the Billikens Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Pavilion.

Deno hit .345 (11-1-29) on the afternoon and added seven digs, two service aces and a solo block. Emma Goldschmidt had eight kills and turned in a .636 attack percentage (8-1-11), the best by a Billiken this season, to lead Saint Louis (10-8, 6-2 A-10) to a .330 team hitting mark. The Bills committed just 10 errors on 94 swings.

Carly Marcum collected nine kills (9-3-17, .353) and four blocks, Andrea Beaty had nine kills and a match-high five blocks, and Cassie Clarke posted 33 assists and seven digs. The Billikens also received strong defensive efforts from Grace Bonoma (10 digs), Ashley Gaillot (10 digs) and Carly Schumacher (four blocks). SLU outblocked La Salle (5-19, 1-6 A-10) 9-3.

The Explorers got eight kills from Jacquelyn Mitrovich and a match-high 15 digs from Breanna Mazalewski.

A 6-0 spurt gave Saint Louis a 9-2 cushion in set one. La Salle drew to within five points twice, the second occasion a 13-8 Billiken lead. SLU finished the set with a flurry from there, scoring 12 of the last 15 points. Deno led the way with five kills, and Beaty added four.

La Salle was much more stubborn in set two, and Saint Louis led just 8-7 early. Four consecutive points provided some breathing room, however, and the Billikens gradually pulled away. Goldschmidt tallied five of her eight kills in the set, while Beaty and Marcum recorded three blocks apiece.

In the final set, SLU sprinted to a 9-3 advantage and maintained the lead between five and nine points the rest of the way. Marcum had five kills on five attempts.

The Billikens play just one match next week, traveling to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne Friday, Oct. 21. Match time is 6 p.m. (CT).
