ST. LOUIS - Courtney Webb scored a season-high 18 points and Lorreal
Jones recorded her fifth
double-double of the season in Saint Louis' 61-56 Atlantic 10 Conference loss
to Fordham Sunday afternoon at Chaifetz Arena.
The loss dropped the Billikens to 10-15 overall and
4-6 in the A-10. Fordham improved to 18-7, 8-2.
Webb tied her career high with four 3-pointers
(4-of-8). Jones tallied 16 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, Desirae Ball netted 14 points and Jacy Bradley registered four assists.
Fordham's Erin Rooney led all scorers with 19
points to go with six rebounds and a game-high six assists. Samantha Clark had
14 points, eight rebounds and four blocks; Arielle Collins scored 12 points;
and Abigail Corning narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a
game-high 13 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Corning added four
assists.
The Billikens edged the Rams 43-40 on the boards -
including a season-high-tying 17 offensive rebounds - and tied their season low
with seven turnovers.
Fordham took command early in the second half,
using a 16-4 run to turn a 28-28 halftime tie into a 44-32 cushion with 10:29 remaining.
SLU scored the next five points on a three-point
play by Ball and a jumper by Bradley, but a bucket by Clark and two free throws
by Collins put Fordham on top 48-37.
The Billikens assembled a 6-0 mini run consisting
of two Jones free throws, a fast-break basket by Bradley and a Jones jumper,
and the Fordham advantage was cut to 48-43 with 3:52 left.
The Rams were scoreless on their next possession,
but the Bills failed to take advantage. After Clark and Ball traded 3-pointers,
Fordham led 51-46 at the 2:19 mark.
Ball answered two Christina Gaskin free throws with
a jumper. Corning was fouled while making a layup but missed the free throw,
and Jones' layup with just under a minute left made it 55-50 Rams.
After Fordham expanded its lead to 58-50 with free
throws, Webb buried a 3-pointer. Collins made just one of two free throws, and
another Webb trey trimmed the Fordham advantage to 59-56 with 18 seconds to go.
But Clark sank a pair of free throws to make it a two-possession game, and the
Billikens could draw no closer.
Jones scored nine points, Webb tallied five and
Ball tossed in four as the Bills built an 18-9 lead midway through the first
half. Fordham responded with a 17-3 spurt to claim a 26-21 edge, but SLU
outscored the Rams 7-2 over the last 5:07 of the half to forge a 28-all
deadlock at intermission.
The Billikens are back in action Wednesday, Feb.
20, when they host Butler in the annual Education Day game at Chaifetz Arena.
Tip time is slated for noon.
