Queens, N.Y. - Seventh-ranked St. John's blanked 10th-ranked Saint Louis 1-0 tonight at St. John's Nike Classic before 873 fans on a cold, windswept night at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm handed the Bills their second consecutive shutout.
St. John's struck first in the 17th minute after a Billiken foul 10 yards to the right of the SLU penalty area. Freshman defender Steven Old buried a six-yard header off the free kick with Andre Schmid and Patrik Engstrom picking up the assists. While the Billikens did have a significant amount of possession time in the half, they were unable to generate any dangerous opportunities as the Red Storm out-shot SLU 6-1.
Content to defend and counterattack in the second half, the Red Storm kept the Billiken attack bottled up. SLU's best chance was on freshman Andrew Reeder's diving header that went wide of the left post in the 75th minute.
St. John's (4-1-1) out-shot the Billikens 10-4 as Red Storm keeper Bill Gaudette had to make only one save to post the shutout. SJU also had a 4-0 edge on corners. Bills keeper Jeff Sackman also recorded one save.
Saint Louis (3-3-0) resumes Conference USA action on Sat., Sept. 25 at USF.
