St. Louis - Saint Louis junior midfielder Ryan Wileman scored twice as the Billikens routed DePaul 4-0 tonight in a Conference USA men's soccer match before 1,304 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The win snapped a three-game winless streak for the Billikens.
With Saint Louis exerting consistent pressure throughout the first half, Billiken junior midfielder Ryan Wileman netted his second goal of the season to put SLU on top in the 23rd minute. Wileman drove a 12-yard shot to the left post off a through ball from sophomore midfielder John DiRaimondo.
The Billikens made it a two-goal edge as junior midfielder Danny Wynn found the back of the net for the first time this year in the 27th minute. Wynn picked off a DePaul clearing attempt, nutmegged one defender while stepping back another and sent an eight-yard blast past Blue Demons keeper Michael Timlin. Hermann Trophy candidate Will John stripped another Blue Demons defender and rang a 20-yard laser off the bottom of the cross bar that fell behind the goal line in the 38th minute.
Wileman tallied his second of the night in the 80th minute off a free kick. From the right of the DePaul penalty area, freshman defender Tim Ward played a ball short to Wynn, who dropped it back to Branan. The senior defender threaded it through a myriad of Blue Demons defenders to Wileman, who connected from six yards. It was his first career two-goal game.
Saint Louis out-shot DePaul (2-7-2 overall, 0-2-0 C-USA) 19-6 and had a 9-2 edge in corners. Billiken senior keeper Martin Hutton made four saves to record his first shutout of the season. DePaul's Timlin made seven stops, and his defense cleared two balls off the Demons' line.
Saint Louis (4-3-1 overall, 2-0-1 C-USA) entertains Charlotte in another C-USA match on Sat., Oct. 2, at 7 p.m.
