St. Louis - Saint Louis senior co-captain Ryan Wileman scored a goal and assisted on another as the Billikens throttled Richmond 3-0 this afternoon in the Atlantic 10 Conference regular season finale for both squads at First Market Stadium. The Billikens snapped a three-game winless streak and claimed a share of the A-10 regular-season title, but will be the top seed in the A-10 Tournament this week.
"We approached this game like a postseason tournament match, and we responded extremely well," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "We needed to finish strong going into the A-10 Tournament, and our effort today was championship caliber. We are probably more excited today, though, for our women's team winning its first A-10 Tournament championship and earning its first NCAA bid. Now, we have to go out this week and do the same."
Saint Louis smothered the Spiders in the opening half with an aggressive attack and climbed on top in the ninth minute. On the second of its seven first half corner kicks, SLU junior midfielder Ryan Wileman collected keeper Jeff Sackman's long punt, Wileman sent Patterson in alone against Spiders keeper Eric Sciocchetti. The Bills out-shot the Spiders 12-4 in the opening half.
Wileman buried any idea of a Richmond rally by scoring off junior defender Dan Guffey's throw-in in the 59th minute. Wileman chipped UR's Sciocchetti for his seventh goal of the season.
The Billikens out-shot Richmond (4-8-6 overall, 0-5-4 A-10) 21-9 and held a 10-3 edge in corner kicks. Sackman made two saves, and Pat Disbennett made one as SLU registered its fourth shutout of the season. Richmond's Sciochetti made nine saves before being relieved by Matt Cully, who made two stops.
Saint Louis (9-5-3, 6-1-2) finished in a three-way tie for the regular-season league title with Duquesne and Rhode Island, but beat both teams to claim the top seed. The Bills host the A-10 Tournament beginning with quarterfinal play on Thu., Nov. 10, at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. SLU will play in the semifinals Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
