Dallas - Tulsa exploded for four unanswered goals and overwhelmed Saint Louis 4-1 tonight in the SMU Cocina Classic at Westcott Field. Golden Hurricane forward Jonathan Lange scored twice to spark the victory.
"In the immediate aftermath, it's a difficult result to explain," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "Tulsa played a difficult, overtime game last night, but managed to find the energy and urgency to play today. No excuses, we just didn't come to play."
The teams traded penalty kicks in the opening eight minutes. With goalkeeper Dominic Cervi out of the net, a Tulsa defender was whistled for a handball in the fourth minute. Billiken senior midfielder Jeff Sackman to the lower left corner.
The Golden Hurricane claimed the lead for good in the 18th minute as Matt Wiley buried a 12-yard side volley from the left of the goal. Midfielder Eric Burkholder's cross from the right flank found Wiley unmarked.
Content to absorb pressure and counter attack when the occasion arose in the second half, Lange connected on a break-in in the 57th minute. Matt Thomas' through ball put Lange in on Sackman, and Lange put his shot just under the cross bar. Tulsa connected on yet another counter in the 71st minute as Lange picked up his second goal. Wiley sent a ball across the face of the goal where Lange dived in for the deflection at the left post. Burkholder also picked up an assist on the play.
It was the first time that Saint Louis had lost a game by three goals or more since dropping a 4-0 decision to USA in 1999. Tulsa (2-1-3) out-shot the Billikens 12-11 and posted its first victory against the Bills in seven tries.
Saint Louis (2-3-1) returns to Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Sat., Sept. 24, to take on Northern Illinois for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
