Bills and No. 18 Irish Play to Scoreless Draw

St. Louis - Saint Louis and No. 18 Notre Dame played to a 0-0 overtime tie tonight in the opening day of the Indiana adidas Classic at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Saint Louis (0-1-1) challenges No. 16 Connecticut on Sunday at 11 a.m. (CT).

"I was proud of the effort and commitment from my team tonight against a strong, organized Notre Dame team that likes to play," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "We didn't yield any quality chances, and Notre Dame made two goal line saves to come up with the tie. Obviously, we still need to polish our finishing. It was a good game to watch from a fan's perspective, and the result was probably fair for both teams."

The Billikens had the best scoring opportunity in the first half. Off Hermann Trophy candidate Dan Guffey sent a header on goal that was headed clear by a Fighting Irish defender off the goal post and out.

In the second half, freshman midfielder Kyle Hayes was denied by Irish keeper Andrew Quinn's spectacular reaction save. Sophomore forward Larry Geraghty whipped a cross to the back post, where Hayes tried to bounce a header in, but Quinn sprawled to save the game.

Notre Dame (1-1-1) came up with three shots in the second overtime to out-shoot the Bills 12-10, but SLU had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Senior keeper Nick Billman made four saves to record his first career shutout as a Billiken after transferring from UMass. Quinn made three stops to counter for the Irish.
