Freshman Ross Kaufman Blanks No. 9 Indiana, 1-0

St. Louis - Saint Louis freshman keeper Ross Kaufman made two saves to shut out ninth-ranked Indiana 1-0 tonight in a men's non-conference soccer match at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Senior midfielder Alex Matteson scored in the 36th minute for the winner.

"It always feels good to beat Indiana, which everyone knows is one of the premier programs in the country," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said.

Matteson put the Bills on top with a 12-yard strike that beat IU keeper Chay Cain to his left. After some nifty work along the left end line by Kyle Patterson, the sophomore forward found Matteson breaking toward the goal and unerringly slipped a pass to Matteson's right foot.

"Kyle did all the work, and he found me with a good ball," Matteson said. "From that point, I just have to put it in."

The Billikens survived some pressure late in the game as Indiana pressed for the equalizer, but the SLU defense held up and Kaufman made a save to preserve the win. In the 86th minute, Hoosiers midfielder Josh Tudela's bid from 15 yards was turned aside by a SLU defender, and Greg Stevning's follow shot off the rebound went well high over the cross bar. After an IU corner in the 90th minute, Kaufman easily handled Stevning's looping header.

"We were in that situation of trying to stay organized and protect the lead, and our defenders - Calum Angus, Mo Benne, Dan Guffey and Rob Viviano - were solid, and you hope that you don't get stung," Donigan said. "Ross is playing with confidence and is aggressive. As a field player, you just want to know that your keeper is in the right position and making intelligent decisions. He did that tonight."

After the shots were tied in the first half at 4-4, Indiana (3-3-1) eventually out-shot the Billikens 11-7 and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. IU's Cain made three saves. Saint Louis (3-2-1) continues its eight-game homestand by hosting top-ranked SMU on Fri., Sept. 22, at 7 p.m.
