Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham's Sam Acheampong scored in the 29th minute to lift the Rams to a 1-0 upset win over the ninth-ranked Saint Louis Billikens Sunday in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action at Jack Coffey Field. It was the first loss of the season for the Bills, who dip to 5-1-5 and 1-1-0 in the A-10.
"Fordham did a nice job scoring early, and we missed some opportunities in the second half to equalize," Billiken head coach Dan Donigan said. "We all know the start of conference play is like a new season, and we can't have letdowns like we did in the first half and expect to get positive results. We have to regroup quickly and be ready for Xavier and Dayton at home next weekend."
It was first loss for SLU since Oct. 19 of last year when UMass upended SLU 1-0 at Hermann Stadium.
The Rams (5-5-1, 1-1-0 A-10), who nearly ousted 21st-ranked Charlotte Friday, scored the only goal of the game at the 28:01 mark. Acheampong controlled the ball in a skirmish in the box, and turned and fired into the right side of the net for his first of the year. Tim Richardson assisted on the goal.
The Billikens were out-shot 8-4 in the first half of play, but came out of the break and out-shot the Rams 7-5 in the second half and had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. However, SLU was unable to capitalize on any of its chances and were stoned by Fordham keeper Ryan Meara, who made six saves (three in each half) for the shutout.
Scott Wisniewski had a chance in the second half, but his shot was just off the frame. The Billikens appeared to tie the score late in the match, but the goal was disallowed due to an off-sides call. Brandon Barklage led the way with three shots, while Kyle Patterson and Tim Ream each managed two.
The Billikens return home to face A-10 foes Xavier and Dayton next weekend at Hermann Stadium. Friday's match against Xavier is set for 7 p.m., while the Flyers visit Sunday at 1 p.m.
