Billikens Fall in A-10 Semifinals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Top-seeded Massachusetts used a pair of first-half goals to upend No. 4-seed Saint Louis in a semifinal match Friday at the Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Soccer Championship at Duquesne University's Rooney Field.

The Billikens (11-4-5) now hope for an at-large bid to the 48-team NCAA Tournament, which begins next weekend. SLU will learn its NCAA fate during a selection show that will air Monday between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPNews. The Minutemen (10-6-3) advance to Sunday's A-10 title match and will face the winner of the Dayton/Temple match being played Friday night.

"Give credit to UMass for getting the result," SLU head coach Dan Donigan said. "We are disappointed because I thought we played well. At the same time, I'm disappointed in the two opportunities we gave them that lead to their goals."

Massachusetts jumped on top in the 10th minute on a goal by Chris Roswess. He and SLU keeper Pat Disbennett got to a rolling ball at the top of the box at the same time. Roswess shot it, and it deflected behind Disbennett. Roswess quickly pounced on the ball and buried into the upper portion of the empty net to make it 1-0 UMass.

Later in the frame, Dan Lepone made it 2-0 when he converted on a penalty kick. UMass' Mark DeSantis was brought down in the box by Kyle Hayes in a skirmish.

SLU, which outshot UMass 21-10, had bounce in the second half and generated several chances to score. Kyle Patterson, who had two shots on goal, deflected a Dado Hamzagic service just outside the near post.

The Billikens continued to charge with under 20 minutes to go in regular. Tim Ream blasted a long-range shot high, and Brandon Barklage had a low dribbler saved by UMass keeper Zack Simmons. Calum Angus had a shot blocked, and Rob Viviano had his header corralled by Simmons.
