ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis scored a season-high four goals, including two from senior Tim Ream, in a 4-1 victory against George Washington Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The Billikens have now won four in a row and improve to 7-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Atlantic 10. SLU will put that four-game winning streak on the line when nationally ranked Charlotte comes to Hermann Stadium for a key A-10 matchup Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. Ream's big day completed a three-goal weekend, which included the game winner Friday night against Richmond.
"I was pleased with the resiliency and composure we displayed after giving up the early goal," SLU head coach Dan Donigan said. "We fought back and stuck with our game plan. The fact that we've won our first two conference games, and will be playing at home, we are set up for a big game next weekend against Charlotte."
After falling behind 1-0 on a goal by George Washington's (6-5-0, 0-2-0 A-10) Andy Stadler, the Billikens went to work and scored three unanswered to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
Freshman forward Alex Sweetin tallied the first goal of his career at the 21:52 mark of the first half. In a scrum in the box, sophomore Alex Johnston got the ball to Sweetin. In limited space, Sweetin struck a left-footed drive that tucked just inside the left post for the equalizer.
A goal by senior James Jaramillo - his first of the season - gave the Billiken a 2-1 lead. Freshman Nick Maglasang did the work on the right side and sent a pass inside to Jaramillo, who curled a shot from the right side of the box into the upper-left corner for the SLU lead.
Later, senior Tim Ream scored his second goal in as many games with long drive at 37:52. Sweetin initiated the play with a cross off a restart that was cleared out by GW keeper Erik Haug. Senior Josh Aranda collected the loose ball and dished off to Ream, who found the back of the net from more than 25 yards out for 3-1 Billiken advantage at intermission.
Saint Louis controlled much of the action in the second half, and Ream made it 4-1 when he converted a penalty kick at 68:02.
SLU held a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners. SLU keeper Ross Kaufman made three saves, while Haug stopped six shots on the other end for GW.
