ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis senior Scott Wisniewski notched his first goal of the year to lift the Billikens to a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Xavier in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action Friday night. Senior Tim Ream also scored for the Billikens.
SLU improves to 10-5-0 overall and remains tied for second in the Atlantic 10 with a 5-1-0 mark. SLU's win, in addition to Dayton's 3-0 blanking of nationally ranked Charlotte Friday, sets up a key A-10 matchup Sunday between the Billikens and Flyers. First kick at UD's Baujan Field is set for noon (CT).
"I'm proud of the way we responded after allowing that early goal," SLU head coach Dan Donigan said. "We showed character fighting back on the road in a key conference game late in the season. I don't think Xavier's record is indicative of how tough they play. This was a great win for us, and our guys are looking forward to coming out and competing hard in the showdown Sunday at Dayton."
Xavier jumped on the board early with a goal by El-Hadji Dieng just 1 minute, 56 seconds into the contest.
SLU regained control, however, out-shooting the Musketeers for the rest of the first half. Tim Ream notched the equalizer at 43:12 on a long strike off a free kick. The two teams went into the locker room tied 1-1 and the Bills holding a 7-4 advantage in shots.
Wisniewski scored the game winner at 75:54. Xavier goalie Justin Marshall challenged Wisniewski running toward the box after taking a feed from Ream, and the senior managed to chip the ball over Marshall's head and across the goal line for the eventual winner.
In all, the Billikens out-shot Xavier 15-8 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. SLU keeper Ross Kaufman made three saves for the win in goal.
