ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis' Benny Estes, Alex Sweetin and Mike Roach all scored second-half goals to propel the Billikens to a 3-0 Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer victory Friday at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
With the win, the Billikens improve to 6-6-2 overall and 3-3-0 in A-10 play. Temple dips to 5-8-2 and 3-3-0 in the league.
Saint Louis hosts Saint Joseph's Sunday at Hermann Stadium. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
"This was a important win for us," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "It was a team effort. We started aggressive and attack-minded but we weren't clean enough. But in the second half, we were better in front of the goal. It was nice to get Mike Roach back, and everybody play a part."
Following a scoreless first half that saw each team post four shots, Estes scored at 51:03 to put the Billikens on top. SLU played a ball into the box, and Temple keeper Bret Mollon went up and grabbed it. On the way down, he lost the handle, and the ball rolled to Estes, who hammered a shot from 12 yards into the back of the net. It was his third goal of the season and second in as many games.
The Billikens received an insurance goal from Alex Sweetin in the 77th minute. Adnan Gabeljic took a Sweetin pass and out-raced a Temple defender up the right side. Gabeljic passed to a trailing Sweetin at the top of the box, and Sweetin fired a rocket past the Temple keeper to put SLU up 2-0 with 14:08 remaining in the match.
Roach, seeing his first game action of the year after missing the Bills' first 13 games due to injury, made it 3-0 with a tally at 88:01. Freshman Jon Roeckle played a ball up to Roach, who beat a defender and fired past the far post.
SLU keeper Mark Pais made two saves for his second shutout of the season. The SLU defense shut down the Temple attack in the second half, yielding just two shots late in the match that were blocked by the Billiken defense.
