ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis freshman forward Robbie Kristo registered a goal and an assist as the Billikens picked up a key 3-1 victory against Dayton in Atlantic 10 Conference men's soccer action tonight at Hermann Stadium.
The win moves the Billikens to 6-8-1 overall and 4-3 in league play with two matches remaining. Dayton dips to 5-12 overall and 4-3 in the league. SLU hosts Xavier, which dropped a 1-0 overtime decision tonight at Charlotte, Sunday for a 1 p.m. kick at Hermann Stadium.
"It was key for us to get these three points," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "It wasn't must-win for us, but about as close as you can get to a must-win. Collectively we were sharp and moved the ball well. Now we have to keep it going for Sunday when Xavier comes to town."
Michael Robson opened the scoring in the 15th minute when he buried a drive from the top of the box. It was his first goal of the season.
The Flyers, who were playing a man down when Greg Enstone was sent off with a red card in the 27th minute, equalized in the 39th minute when Auston Smyth tallied on a corner kick. The two teams went into halftime with the score tied 1-1.
The second half was all Billikens. Sophomore defender Jon Roeckle tallied the game winner at 71:55. Kristo took the ball up the right side and fed a streaking Roeckle, who buried it far post.
Kristo notched an insurance marker in the 81st minute. Alex Johnston collected an outlet pass from Cal McKee and raced up the right flank. Johnston managed to get a step on the closest Dayton defender, allowing him to pass across the box to Kristo, who tapped it over the goal line for a 3-1 Billiken advantage.
SLU keeper Nick Shackelford managed one save as the Billiken defense held the Flyers to just five shots. SLU totaled 19 shots on the night.
