Johnston's OT Game Winner Lifts Billikens Past No. 10 Notre Dame

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Saint Louis senior midfielder Alex Johnston scored in the second overtime period to propel the Billikens to a 2-1 triumph against No. 10 Notre Dame Sunday afternoon at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic at Indiana University.

"Today we showed a complete team effort," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "Nick Shackelford (goalkeeper) and Cal McKee (midfielder) started for the first time and they both played great. Everyone gave a full effort, and it was the players off the bench that got us our goals."

Johnston's game winner, scored at 103:56, was set up after a cross from freshman midfielder Raymond Lee on the left flank. Johnston buried the ball into the back of the net for the golden goal. It was Johnston's first tally of the season.

"Alex made a hard play on the ball, attacked it and finished like a champion," McGinty said.

Notre Dame (1-1-1) got on the board in the first half on a goal by Ryan Finley in the 33rd minute, giving the Fighting Irish a 1-0 advantage. That remained the score at halftime.

In the second stanza, the Billikens (1-2) came out firing and the pressure paid off in the 57th minute when sophomore forward Adnan Gabeljic buried the equalizer. A pass from freshman William Hidalgo deflected off a Notre Dame defender, and Gabeljic pounced on it and finished to tie the game at 1-1.

The Billiken defense fought off several Notre Dame chances, including a pair of shots in the final seconds of regulation, to keep it a 1-1 game before Johnston ended it in the second overtime. Sophomore Nick Shackelford earned his first start of the season in goal and made five saves.

"As the clock winded down in regulation, we had a number of guys doing what they could to clear a ball away or block a shot," McGinty said. "We need to keep believing in each other, and this win was big as we continue to develop as a team."

The victory sets up a key matchup next Saturday when Akron, the defending national champions and the No. 2 ranked team in the country, visits Robert R. Hermann Stadium for a 7 p.m. kick.
