AKRON, Ohio - Akron scored in the second half
to break a scoreless tie, and the No. 6 Zips held on for a 1-0 victory against
the Saint Louis Billikens Wednesday night in exhibition men's soccer action at
FirstEnergy Stadium/Cub Cadet Field.
The
Zips' DeAndre Yedlin scored the game winner at 50:53 when his shot was
deflected by a Billiken defender and snuck past keeper Dillon Saffle. Thomas Schmitt earned the assist on the play.
The
Billikens nearly took the lead in the first half in a flurry that saw two solid
scoring chances. First, Jon Roeckle
unleashed a drive from the top of the box that was saved by the Akron keeper.
On the rebound, Robbie Kristo sent a
ball just wide.
For the
second straight match, head coach Mike
McGinty was able to see a wide variety of players in different situations,
as a total of 24 players saw action for SLU.
The
Billikens close out the exhibition season Saturday night at Hermann Stadium
when they host Memphis. First whistle is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Billikens'
season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 24, against nationally ranked Indiana at
Hermann Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
