Second-Half Goals Doom Billikens

RICHMOND, Va. – No. 20 Saint Louis yielded a pair of second-half goals at VCU and fell 2-1 to the Rams Sunday in a non-conference match at VCU's Sports Backers Stadium.

Saint Louis, which moves to 6-3 overall with the loss, received a first-half goal from sophomore midfielder David Graydon. But VCU scored twice in the final 17 minutes, including the game-winner in the 85th minute, to pick up the victory. The Rams, who were receiving votes in this week's NSCAA coaches poll, improve to 4-4-1 with the win.

SLU goalkeeper Nick Shackelford fought off several VCU chances in the opening minutes of the game, and the Billikens broke through in the 37th minute. Junior forward Kingsley Bryce fired a shot that was saved by VCU keeper Andrew Wells. Graydon put the rebound home for his second goal of the season and an early 1-0 Billiken advantage, a lead the Billikens would carry into halftime.

VCU equalized in the 74th minute when Garrett Harvey headed home a Nate Shiffman cross. Later, VCU's Jose Manel collected a Devon Fisher through ball and scored the game-winner with less that five minutes to go in the match.

Saint Louis opens Atlantic 10 Conference play next weekend with a pair of matches at Hermann Stadium. Fordham (3-6) visits Friday, Oct. 11, for a 7:30 p.m. match, while George Washington (3-6) is the opponent Sunday, Oct. 13, in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff.
