Billikens Oust Rhode Island, Move into First Place in A-10

KINGSTON, R.I. – Saint Louis senior Alex Sweetin scored two goals and added an assist as the Billikens rolled to a 5-0 victory at Rhode Island Friday night.

SLU's win, coupled with a George Mason tie vs. Duquesne, means the Billikens can capture the A-10 regular-season title with a win Sunday at UMass. Game time is scheduled for noon (CT).

Saint Louis moves to 11-4-2 overall and 5-0-2 in the A-10, while Rhode Island falls to 2-13 overall and 0-7 in the league.

Kingsley Bryce got things started when he scored just over three minutes into the contest. He collected a pass from Robert Kristo and beat the keeper 1v1 for the game's first goal. Kristo got into the scoring mix in the 34th minute when he buried a Sweetin pass to make it 2-0.

Sweetin would score the next two goals for SLU, one just before halftime off an assist from Raymond Lee and one at the start of the second half off an assist by Marco Heskamp.

Jair Minors scored his first-career goal at the 77:47 mark. Adnan Gabeljic had his shot saved by the URI keeper, but the rebound came to Minors who scored in the open net for the Billikens' fifth and final goal.

Nick Shackelford made four saves to preserve the shutout.

On Sunday, SLU will be going for its fourth A-10 regular-season title and its first since 2007. The game, which kicks at noon St. Louis time, will be streamed live by UMass through the A-10 Digital Network.
