RICHMOND, Va. – The second-seeded Saint Louis Billikens dropped a 2-1 decision to sixth-seeded Fordham Friday in a semifinal matchup at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. Fordham advances to face top-seeded Rhode Island in the A-10 title match on Sunday.
Even with the loss, the Billikens (13-4-2) are in a good position to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. Saint Louis entered the week with an RPI of 14 and has been nationally ranked throughout the year. The 48-team field for the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship will be announced at noon (CT) Monday during the Selection Show that will air live on NCAA.com. Â
SLU had the better of play against Fordham, outshooting the Rams 25-8 and holding a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks. But Fordham scored at opportune times to end the Billikens' bid of bringing home their second A-10 title in the last three years.
Ryan Cupolo scored for Fordham in the 29th minute to make it 1-0. The Rams scored again in the second half when Jannik Loebe put one home at the 76:31 mark.
SLU cut its deficit in half when David Graydon scored in the 81st minute. He took a pass from Kingsley Bryce, carried it to the top of the box, and rifled a shot in the upper-right side netting to make it a 2-1 game.
That ended up as the final, but not before a dramatic last second shot by SLU that was tipped over the crossbar by Fordham keeper Sean Brailey.
