ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis defeated Rhode Island 3-1 Saturday on Senior Night at Hermann Stadium, completing a perfect A-10 regular-season and sending the No. 10 Bills into the postseason riding a nine-match winning streak.
Â
The Billikens, who came into the match having already clinched the A-10 regular-season title and the No. 1 seed for the A-10 Men's Soccer Championship, improve to 12-0-3 overall and 8-0-0 in A-10 play.
Â
SLU completed its regular season without a loss for the first time since the 1971 team produced a 14-0-0 regular-season record. The Billikens are the first A-10 program since 1993 to go through the A-10 season with no losses or ties (Rutgers, 7-0-0).
Â
Next up for the Billikens is an A-10 Men's Soccer Championship quarterfinal round matchup against eighth-seeded Dayton at Hermann Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. The full bracket is available here.
Â
Becher put the Billikens on top with a goal in the 20th minute. Isaiah Parker fed a ball to Chandler Vaughn, who one-touched it into the six. Becher ran onto it and poked it over with his opposite foot to make it 1-0 SLU.
Â
It was Becher's team- and A-10 leading 11th goal of the year. He has now scored a goal in nine straight games.
Â
Kipp Keller made it 2-0 Saint Louis on a penalty kick in the 40th minute. Vaughn started the play with a nice run and pass to Becher, who was fouled in the box before being able to get a shot off. Keller took the ensuing PK and buried it into the back of the net for a 2-0 Billiken advantage.
Â
John Klein made it 3-0 Billikens with a goal on a breakaway in the 59th minute. He collected an errant pass from Rhode Island and took it in all alone, finishing to the right side of the net for his fourth goal of the year.
Â
Patrick Schulte made three saves for the win in goal. The Billikens managed a 14-10 shots advantage and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
