BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's Ryan Wittenbrink scored in the 75th minute to lift the Hoosiers past Saint Louis 1-0 Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship at Bill Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
Â
Saint Louis' successful season comes to a close with a 12-5-3 overall record. The Billikens captured the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season and tournament titles for the second year in a row and made the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship for a record 50th time in program history.
Â
Indiana (11-4-6) advances to the third round where it will face either Virginia or Marshall next weekend.
Â
Wittenbrink, the Hoosiers' leading scorer, scored the only goal of the game at the 74:27 mark of the second half. He had the ball just inside the box, maneuvered for a shot, and fired to the far post past a sprawling
Carlos Tofern for the eventual game-winner.
Â
The Billiken defense kept it close as the Hoosiers managed 16 shots and just three on target. SLU had 11 shots and five corner kicks, but were unable to get a shot on goal in the match.
