Former Billiken Patrick Schulte was the starting goalkeeper for the Columbus Crew as they took home the 2023 MLS Cup with a 2-1 victory over LAFC on Saturday.
Â
The youngest starting goalkeeper ever in an MLS Cup final, Schulte stopped four shots against LAFC to help Columbus register its third MLS Cup in franchise history.
Â
In 2023, Schulte started 31 games between the posts for Columbus and totaled seven shutouts and 90 saves. He was fourth in MLS with 15 victories.

Schulte's impressive season in MLS came after he was named the MLS NEXT Pro Goalkeeper of the Year in 2022 with Columbus Crew 2.
Â
The first-round (12th overall) draft pick by Columbus in the 2022 MLS SuperDraft had a stellar three-year career as a Billiken. He was the Atlantic 10 Conference's Defensive Player of the Year in 2020 and was a first-team All-Conference pick in 2021. In 2021, he helped the Billikens to a 16-1-4 record and an NCAA quarterfinal appearance.
Â
In three years at SLU, Schulte appeared in 51 matches and posted a 0.84 goals against average, 22 shutouts, and a 35-12-4 record.
