AMES, Iowa – A quartet of men's runners set new school records on Saturday at the Iowa State Classic, which was contested at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames, Iowa, on the campus of Iowa State University.
Â
Toby Gillen lowered his own school record in the mile, finishing fifth among collegiate runners with a time of 4:02.33. That bettered his own school record set two weeks ago at DePaul.
Â
Likewise,
Will Stewart improved his school record in the 200 meters, turning in a time of 22.08 to place sixth overall. His previous record of 22.09 was set two weeks back at DePaul.
Â
Harrison Martinenko is the new school-record holder in the 1,000 meters, finishing second in a time of 2:26.32. That betters
Malik Stewart's school record that was set earlier this year. Matt De Hass finished just behind Martinenko in third with a time of 2:27.56.
Â
Finally,
Luke Schaefer led a trio of three Billikens,
Jack McPhillips and
Aidan Martin being the others, in the 600 yards who all finished within a half-second of each other. Schaefer's time of 1:15.33 was the top time of the group and the best time in school history in the rarely competed event.
Â
On the women's side, the Billikens had the top three finishers in the 600 yards –Â
Abby Kieffer (1:29.58),
Erin Murray (1:31.20) and
Morgan Rust (1:31.99).
Carolyn Tarpey was first in the pole vault with a mark of 3.05 meters.
Â
SLU placed third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:58.59. The team was
Emily Nichols,
Patricia O'Neill,
Abby Kieffer and
Jillian Jackson.
Â
For the men,
James Baker was the winner in the pole vault with a mark of 4.05 meters.
Jayden Kouadio finished second in the triple jump (13.43 meters) and third in the long jump (6.16 meters).
Ethan Bryant was third in the triple jump (13.24 meters).
Â
The men's 4x400-meter relay of
Danny Hopkins,
Malik Stewart,
Luke Schaefer and
Jack McPhillips won the event with a time of 3:22.33.
