Gillen Claims 5,000 Meters Title at A-10 Championships

Amherst, Mass. – Toby Gillen captured the fifth Atlantic 10 Conference crown of his career this weekend, winning the 5,000 meters in convincing fashion at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships at UMass.

Gillen's time of 14:13.93 was a UMass Track and Field Complex facility record. He pulled away from the lead group in the final lap to finish four seconds clear of the second-place finisher. Gillen won the 5,000 meters in the outdoor meet after taking the bronze in the event a year ago.

Evan Bruenderman and Jayden Kouadio finished third and fourth in the triple jump with PRs of 15.25 meters. Diego Collado was fourth in the shot put (15.94 meters). Will Stewart turned in fourth-place finishes in the 100 meters (10.65) and 200 meters (21.61). James Baker was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles (53.97).

On the women's side, Madi Person took bronze in the heptathlon with a school-record 4,870 points. Emily Nichols just missed the podium in the 400 meters, finishing fourth in a time of 55.05. Madeline Rowold scored in her first A-10 Championship, finishing seventh in the javelin with a mark of 39.85 meters.

The men's team placed sixth overall, their best finish at the meet since 2017. The women's squad placed 12th as a team.
