AUSTIN, Texas – Saint Louis' Toby Gillen earned second-team All-America honors after finishing 13th overall in the 5,000 meters Friday at the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas.
Gillen, the first-ever Billiken to qualify for an NCAA final, ran the 5,000 meters in 14:14.36. Ky Robinson of Stanford won the event with a time of 14:04.77.
The run capped a long, and historic, season for Gillen. It began last fall when he earned All-Conference honors in cross country, finishing 10th at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships back in October.
At the A-10 Indoor Track and Field Championships in February, Gillen earned two golds by claiming conference titles in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters.
Gillen earned national recognition in the outdoor season when he ran the 5,000 meters in 13:35.29 at the Raleigh Relays in March. At the time, that was the fastest time in the NCAA and one of the fastest times in the world this season. He went on to capture A-10 gold in the 5,000 and lowered his school-record in the event to 13:30.27 in the NCAA First Round competition, which qualified him for the NCAA Championships.
