ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis University Department of Athletics announced on Monday the naming of Rick Majerus Court at Chaifetz Pavilion, the practice facility for the Billiken men's and women's basketball programs and the home venue for SLU volleyball. Family and friends of Coach Majerus were on hand for a court dedication on Monday morning at Chaifetz Pavilion.
"There is no better way to honor Coach Rick Majerus than to have his name on the court where our student-athletes practice and compete," SLU Director of Athletics Chris May said. "As much as he loved basketball, he loved teaching and serving our student-athletes even more. So we hope this is a fitting tribute to Coach Majerus' legacy. We send our gratitude to Jodi Majerus and Lori Hoch of the Majerus Family Foundation for their support of this project."
The Chaifetz Pavilion floor was completely replaced this summer, providing a state-of-the-art court surface to better serve SLU's student-athletes. Additionally, new bleachers were installed to enhance the fan experience at Billiken volleyball matches.
At Monday's dedication, SLU Vice President of Mission and Identity David Suwalsky, S.J., Ph.D., blessed the court. Women's basketball head coach Rebecca Tillett and men's basketball head coach Travis Ford spoke. Jodi Majerus then spoke on behalf of the Majerus family.
Majerus served as the Billikens' head coach for five years from 2007-12. He was selected to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.
Majerus posted a 95-69 record at SLU and guided the Billikens to the 2012 NCAA Tournament in his final season, which was SLU's first NCAA appearance in 12 years. The Billikens would go on to make two additional NCAA Tournament appearances with a core group of players recruited to SLU by Majerus.
In a 25-year career that also included stints at Marquette, Ball State and Utah, Majerus won a total of 517 games. He reached the postseason 17 times, and his 12 NCAA Tournament appearances included a spot in the 1998 national championship game with Utah.
