Billikens Fare Well at Butler Duals

FISHERS, Ind. – Saint Louis collected four team victories in the women's meet and one team win in men's competition Sunday at its season-opening meet, the Butler Duals.
 
The Billiken women defeated Butler 166-68, Bellarmine 194-40 and Indianapolis 179-63. SLU fell 148.50-90.50 to Xavier.
 
The SLU men posted a 182-49 win over Bellarmine while falling 141-90 to Xavier and 153-90 to Indianapolis.
 
Emily Leonard, Karis Reynaga and Lauren Van Vooren won events for the Saint Louis women. Leonard touched first in the 500 free (5:11.85) and 1000 free (10:40.29), Reynaga captured the 200 free (1:56.10), and Van Vooren won the 1-meter diving competition (216.60). Reynaga added a second-place tie in the 100 free (54.47).
 
Morgan Walker and Meghan Eng joined Leonard and Reynaga as Billiken swimmers with two top-5 swims. Walker was third in the 1000 free (11:02.62) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:14.21), and Eng placed third in the 500 free (5:19.57) and fifth in the 200 free (1:58.87).
 
The quartet of Reynaga, Carly McKeon, Elena Escalante and Leonard were runners-up in the 400 free relay (3:35.39).
 
Also recording top-five finishes for the women's team were Hazel Perkins, third in the 200 breast (2:29.31); McKeon, fourth in the 500 free (5:23.65); MaryBeth Clark, fourth in the 200 fly (2:11.37); Meggie McPherson, fifth in the 200 back (2:10.49); Ellerie Seifert, fifth in the 200 breast (2:30.95); Mia Yeo, fifth in the 200 fly (2:12.27); and Faith McAdam, fifth in the 1000 free (11:13.49).
 
Jeddrick Gamilla posted a victory in the 200 breast (2:08.15) for the Billiken men. Gamilla also placed fifth in the 200 IM (1:58.95). Franklin Liu also landed among the top five in two events, finishing third in the 1000 free (9:54.73) and fourth in the 500 free (4:46.01).
 
Colton Mosley (21.74), Ethan Highley (22.02) and Jack Redden (22.13) placed second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 50 free. Third-place performances were turned in by Brae Sanchez in the 200 breast (2:10.14) and Daniel Jekov in the 200 back (1:56.92), while Logan Townsend finished fourth in the 100 free (48.27).
 
The 400 free relay team of Lenny DeMartino, Highley, Jekov and Ryan Bates placed third (3:12.75).
 
The Billikens host UMSL in a dual meet Saturday, Sept. 30, beginning at noon at Simon Recreation Center.
