HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Saint Louis men's tennis erased a 3-1 deficit and defeated Rider 4-3 Tuesday morning.
It was the fourth 4-3 victory of the season for the Billikens, who improved to 8-2.
Declan Townsend's 6-0, 6-1 win over Cooper Dillon at No. 4 singles ignited SLU's comeback.
Theo Ortis outlasted Jake Grimes 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 to even the match, and
Valentin Vasquez got past Elyad Oshnavie 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 to put Saint Louis in the win column.
Ortis and
Ryota Fukushima edged Giacomo Ghitti and Ibragim Turgambekov 7-5 at No. 2 doubles, but Rider captured the point with victories at Nos. 1 and 3. The deciding No. 3 contest went to a tiebreaker.
Luca Lo Nardo defeated Roger Martinez 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to even the match before Rider went in front with wins at the top two positions, setting the stage for SLU's comeback.
"I thought we rebounded well after doubles today," head coach
Justin Stuckey said. "We didn't adjust as great to outdoor play as I would have hoped. However, I thought we did a great job of managing the situation we were in. Coming back from losing the doubles point is very hard to do. We managed to do that very well today."
The Billikens face Hillsdale Wednesday at 5 p.m. Central.
