ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis men's tennis won another close decision Friday afternoon, defeating Butler 4-3 at Dwight Davis Tennis Center.
The Billikens improved to 12-2 with their fourth consecutive victory and fifth 4-3 win of the season.
Butler won the No. 3 doubles match, but SLU prevailed at the other two positions to grab the point.
Adam Behun and
Declan Townsend were 6-4 winners over Alvaro Huete Vadillo and Arnesh Singh at No. 1, and the No. 2 team of
Theo Ortis and
Ryota Fukushima won the remaining contest, 7-5 over Borja Miralles and Patrick Joss.
After Butler pulled even by winning at No. 2 singles, Saint Louis took a 3-1 lead with victories at Nos. 1 and 4. Fukushima edged Miralles 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 1, while Townsend pulled away from Nicholas Balthazor 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 4.
Wins at Nos. 6 and 3 by the Bulldogs tied the score once again, leaving the competitors at No. 5 to decide the match. Behun came from behind to take out Nicholas Shirley 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
"Doubles was key today," head coach
Justin Stuckey said. "I thought we did a great job of closing and returning well. In singles, we still need to be better with our focus. We had several matches that got away from us because of that. But overall, a good team win."
The Billikens face Atlantic 10 Conference opponent Duquesne Thursday, April 11, in Dayton, Ohio.
