CINCINNATI –
Sandra Gines won a tight decision at No. 4 singles to clinch the match as Saint Louis concluded the regular season with a 4-2 victory over Atlantic 10 Conference rival Duquesne Thursday at Five Seasons Racquet Club.
With SLU leading the match 3-2 and trailing 1-0 in the third set at No. 6 singles, Gines made sure the contest would not go the distance by squeaking past Kaya Rand 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
The Billikens (14-3) took a 1-0 lead by capturing a closely contested doubles point. The No. 3 team of
Fiorella Duran and
Emmerson White breezed past Ana Utrilla Benito and Sofia Serrano 6-1, and after Duquesne claimed a 7-5 decision at No. 2,
Elizabeth Mintusova and
Kseniia Aleshina edged Rand and Daniela Latoni 7-6 at No. 1.
Joining Gines in the singles win column were Mintusova, who prevailed 6-1, 6-2 over Latoni at No. 1, and Aleshina, a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Jasa Roka at No. 3.
"I thought we did an excellent job of loving to compete," head coach
Justin Stuckey said. "Today was the opposite of our previous match. We had adversity and moments where we were tested, and we stepped up to the challenge. Credit must go to Duquesne, as they really fought and pushed us."
Up next for the Billikens is the A-10 Championship April 24-27 in Orlando, Fla.
