Saint Louis travels to Dallas, Texas, for its first road game of the season on Thursday night when it takes on the SMU Mustangs. Game time is 8:30 p.m.
Â
The Billikens defeated Indiana 2-0 in the season opener behind a goal by Matthew Wrobel and an Indiana own goal. Jeremi Abonnel was sharp between the posts with three saves, including a stop on a PK. The staunch Billiken back line held the Indiana attack at bay, only yielding seven shots on the night.
Â
SMU defeated Air Force 1-0 and played to a 1-1 draw against Oral Roberts on opening weekend. The Mustangs were ranked No. 10 in the preseason United Soccer Coaches poll but are receiving votes this week.
Â
Here are five additional facts in advance of Thursday's match vs. SMU:
Â
1 // Matthew Wrobel was named the Atlantic 10 Conference co-Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Indiana. It is the second time that Wrobel has earned the honor in his career – the first time came in 2022 when he received the accolade while playing for St. Bonaventure.
Â
2 //Â SLU defender Joey Maher was named to the A-10 preseason All-Conference team. He comes to SLU after a stellar four-year career at IU, playing in two College Cups with the Hoosiers, including last year as a team captain. In all, Maher appeared in 85 matches (83 starts) at Indiana and was part of a defense that collected 40 shutouts.
Â
3 //Â Five Billikens are returning to their home state of Texas for Thursday's game, including Cole Dougherty who is from nearby Heath, Texas. Billiken defender Grady Easton is a Texas native and transferred to SLU after playing in seven games for SMU in 2021.
Â
4 //Â SLU head coach Kevin Kalish, a two-time A-10 Coach of the Year, is in his seventh season at SLU and 13th overall as a collegiate head coach. Kalish is 62-26-19 during his time at SLU and 111-72-33 in his career.
Â
5 // Saint Louis and SMU are continuing a long-standing rivalry. This will be the 39th meeting between the squads in a series that began in 1975. In fact, SMU is the Billikens' third-most common opponent, trailing only Indiana (47 meetings) and SIUE (40 meetings). SMU leads the all-time series 17-14-7. The Mustangs have won two in a row in the series, including last year's 1-0 victory, and are 4-0-3 over the last seven meetings. SLU's last win came in 2005, a 4-2 Billiken win in Dallas.
