SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A pair of school records fell on Friday as the Billikens opened competition at the Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame.
The women's Distance Medley Relay broke the school record after finishing in a time of 11:41.07, smashing the previous mark of 11:54.31. The quartet was comprised of Sonja Morin, Quincy Hubert, Starr Scott and Emily Morden.
Moments later, the men's DMR school record was broken as the Bills finished in 9:56.02, a time that currently ranks 15th in the country. Lukasz Iwanowski, Sam Lamaze, Chase Pitre and George Blanco made up the school-record squad.
Other strong performances on day one included Brock Waugh and Manny Vela in the 5,000 meters. Their times of 14:09.41 and 14:31.11 rank No. 2 and No. 5 all-time in school history in the event.
Sophia Pelligreen went low in the 5,000 meters, finishing in a time of 17:14.07. Erica Broin posted a high jump of 1.64 meters to win the event.
"Our relays and distance runners competed very well tonight," SLU head coach Jon Bell said. "Anytime school records are set or top 5 times are run you have to be pleased. It was also nice to see Erica Broin have success tonight. It's been a few years – prior to her mission while at BYU – since she has jumped that high. Â
The Billikens continue the Meyo Invitational tomorrow morning.
"Tomorrow will be a big day for both our men's and women's teams," Bell said. "Some of our best athletes will be competing in their best events."
Live results of the Meyo Invitational can be found here. The meet will also be streamed on ACCNX beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).
