Billikens Top Indiana 1-0; Advance in NCAA Championship

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Tanner Anderson scored in the 17th minute and the Billiken defense held the potent Indiana offense at bay in a 1-0 victory Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

The Billikens (12-2-7) await the result from this evening's Bryant/Seton Hall match that will determine their opponent in the third round (Round of 16) next weekend.

It was Saint Louis' first win against Indiana in six NCAA Tournament games. Additionally, the Billikens knocked off the Hoosiers in Bloomington for the first time since 1999.

The Billikens got on the board first on their first, and only, shot on goal at the 16:16 mark. SLU goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel, who had already made three saves in the early portion of the contest, sent a long ball ahead to Theo Franca, who flicked it on. Anderson collected it and fired a shot into the side netting for this third goal of the season. It was the first career assist for both Abonnel and Franca, and the first assist by a Billiken goalkeeper since Patrick Schulte earned a helper against LIU in the second round of the 2021 NCAA Championship at Hermann Stadium.

Indiana (12-6-1), the No. 6 overall seed, came into the contest with the second-ranked offense in the nation, but the Billiken back line did not break. IU came out fast and had several chances early on that Abonnel was able to keep out of the net.

Overall, Indiana had a 16-3 edge in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Saint Louis advances to the third round (Round of 16) for the second time under eighth-year head coach Kevin Kalish. The last time the Bills reached the third round was during the 2021 season, when they advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.
