Billikens Conclude Early Portion of Season

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Saint Louis competed in the Indiana Early Bird Friday at the Gladstein Fieldhouse on the campus of Indiana University.

It was one of two early meets for the Billikens break. The main portion of the indoor season will pick back up in mid January and last through March.

"I have mixed feelings regarding the performances from Indiana," SLU head coach Jon Bell said. "On one hand, our short sprinters had a tremendous day. We have never had three men break 7.0 seconds in the 60 meters all on the same day. For the women we had two of our top-five performances all time. The short sprinters had a great day. Chase Pitre and Becky Phillips had great runs over 600 meters, both top-five performances. On the other hand though, our long sprinters and field event athletes struggled. We looked flat and struggled with a lot of fouled attempts. Despite both groups being older, I believe finals week took a toll on them mentally and we were just not sharp enough to compete. The break will be good for everyone to reset and come back in early January to begin the heart of the indoor season."

Among the highlights on the men's side was SLU's performance in the 60 meters. Will Stewart led the way with a time of 6.93. Boen Brockmiller (6.97) and Marvin Sze (6.99) posted the third and fourth, respectively, top times ever in the event.

On the women's side, Katie Kocan's time in the 60 meters (7.74) was the second-fastest ever, while Ellie Shanahan had the program's fifth-fastest time ever in the 60 meters (7.89). Becky Phillips ran the 600 meters in a PR 1:34.98, which ranks fourth all-time.

The Billikens' first meet after break is the Show-Me Showdown at the University of Missouri on Jan. 16.
