VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Saint Louis broke school records and captured several medals during the Atlantic 10 Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, held Friday and Saturday at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.
Journey Amundson captured the gold medal and the A-10 title in the triple jump, finishing first with a mark of 12.66 meters. She claimed silver in the long jump after a school-record leap of 6.05 meters. It was the first indoor medals for Amundson, who won gold last year in the triple jump during the outdoor campaign.
Lukasz Iwanowski won the silver in the 1,000 meters, crossing the finish in 2:26.23, SLU second-fasted time ever in the event.
Tristan Boatman was the bronze medalist in the weight throw, finishing with a mark of 17.96 meters.
The men's 4x400-meter relay team finished third with a school-record time to capture the bronze. The quartet of Carson Amstutz, Chase Pitre, Jace Peterson and Sam Lamaze finished in 3:15.18.
"I'm pleased with the way we competed this weekend," SLU head coach Jon Bell said. "We had some special performances and the hard work that these student athletes put in was on display.Unfortunately we did miss a few opportunities, which we will address as we enter the outdoor season. I'm excited to get onto the outdoor season, where I feel we can perform at an even higher level."
Other strong performances for the Bills included Sam Lamaze in the 400 meters. The freshman placed fourth overall after posted a school-record time of 48.10 in the prelims.
Chase Pitre (500 meters), Brock Waugh (3,000 meters) and Evan Bruenderman (triple jump) all scored in the meet with fourth-place finishes.
Riley Franz ran the second-fastest time in school history in the 1,000 meters (2:54.60). Caigan Leonard's time in the 60-meter hurdles of 8.93 was fourth in the SLU record book.
The men's team placed seventh with 55.5 points. The women's squad was ninth with 31 points.
