The Billiken Tryout Information

Introduction
It takes tremendous effort, dedication, sacrifice, discipline, and devotion for you to continue the great tradition that is The Billiken. Being a part of this program is truly a once in a lifetime experience. This opportunity will transform your relations with your alma mater for the rest of your life.
 
Billiken Prerequisite Tryout Information
All candidates in the Spirit Program must embody the spirit, values, and traditions of Saint Louis University. To be considered for The Billiken, candidates must meet the tryout pre-requisite listed below.
  • Currently enrolled student at Saint Louis University by the tryout completion date
  • At least freshman status during the semester of your tryout
  • In good academic standing dictated by the NCAA/Atlantic 10 Conference Standard
  • Can commit to at least 10 hours a week for team and appearance related commitments
  • Have a flexible schedule year round
  • Have a cumulative GPA of a 2.0 or higher (Once on the team, a student-athlete must maintain a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or higher in order to remain on the team. In addition, all student athletes must abide by the standards and requirements dictated by the Saint Louis University Code of Conduct
Athletic and Non-Athletic Appearance Commitments
This commitment will require you to assist in various athletic and non-athletic appearances. These include but are not limited to: 
  • Men's and Women's Soccer Games (Home)
  • Women's Volleyball (Home)
  • Women's Field Hockey (Home)
  • Men's and Women's Basketball (Home)
  • Swimming and Diving (Home)
  • Baseball (Home)
  • Softball (Home)
  • Community enhancement events (on and off campus)
  • Wedding and Celebrations
  • Student Involvement Events
  • Alumni Association Events
There will be opportunities to travel for post season athletic opportunities. This is a very dynamic program that requires a year–round time commitment, along with a certain level of availability and flexibility in your schedule.

Tryout Information
Interviews
Each candidate will meet with coaches. In this portion of the tryout, we are looking to understand you as a person and evaluate the following qualities that are critical to members of the mascot team.
  • Self-Awareness
  • Integrity
  • Collaboration/Teamwork
  • Level of Commitment
Please arrive at least five  minutes early dressed in business professional attire.

In Costume
In this portion of the tryout, we are looking to evaluate your ability to bring the The Billiken brand to life. Here we will evaluate the following:
  • Character Development – How well you portray The Billiken
  • Athleticism
  • Improvisation and Prop Use – in game skit and bit execution
  • X – Factor - any special talents or skills you would like to showcase
Tryout Schedule
Date: August 31 and September 1
Location: Chaifetz Arena Pavilion
Time: Each participant will be assigned a time block on either August 31st or September 1st
Itinerary: Will be sent to participants two weeks prior to tryouts.

Team Selection
Upon conclusion of tryouts, and after deliberation period, the team will be announced.
  • 2 lead Billikens for Men's Basketball and marquee events
  • 2 lead Billikens for Women's Basketball and community appearances
  • 2 lead Billikens for Olympic sports and community appearances
