Billikens, Bulls Play to Scoreless Draw

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis men's soccer opened its season on Thursday night with a scoreless draw against South Florida in front of 2,018 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Saint Louis had the better of the scoring chances on the night to the tune of a 9-3 advantage in shots and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.

Bulls keeper Jahiem Wickham was strong in goal, stopping four SLU shots for the clean sheet. His SLU counterpart Jeremi Abonnel stopped one shot for his 14th career shutout.

The Billikens had the first scoring chance in the first half on a corner kick. JC Cortez sent a ball to the far post for Drake Fournier, whose shot was saved by the USF keeper.

Late in the first half, USF's Jakob Auby had a chance but sent his shot wide of the frame.

Early in the second half, Braydon Sellers sent in a shot from distance but Wickham was again up to the task, deflecting the shot over the cross bar.

With 10 minutes left, Andrew Heckenlaible headed one inside the six that was saved by Wickham. Moments later, USF broke out and got through the SLU defense, but was whistled offsides.

The Billikens continue their season-opening three-game homestand on Sunday night when they host No. 5 SMU at Hermann Stadium in a 7:30 p.m. kick. It is the second game of a doubleheader as the SLU women's team hosts Missouri at Hermann Stadium beginning at 5 p.m.
