ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University announced today that it is discontinuing its NCAA Division I men's and women's tennis programs, effectively immediately.
"After a thorough and strategic review of our NCAA Division I sport offerings, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue the men's and women's tennis programs," SLU Director of Athletics
Chris May said. "The landscape of intercollegiate athletics continues to evolve nationally, and universities are making hard decisions to best position their programs for long-term sustainability and success. This decision is not a reflection of our tennis student-athletes and staff. We are grateful for the contributions of head coach James Tobin, staff members Lizzie Barlow and Emilien Burnel, and all of our men's and women's tennis student-athletes."
The Billikens concluded the 2025-26 season last week at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships. The programs' combined roster includes 19 student-athletes (10 men, nine women), including five who will graduate this spring.
Why is the University discontinuing the tennis program?
The decision followed a comprehensive evaluation of the program. Several factors were considered, including facilities, operations and community engagement. Additionally, given the current landscape of collegiate tennis, we determined there are limited opportunities to consistently compete at a high level.
How was this decision made?
Upon completion of its extensive review of the tennis program, the Athletics Department recommended its closure to University leadership. Leadership accepted the recommendation and made the determination to discontinue the tennis program.
What will happen to the tennis student-athletes?
Of the 19 student-athletes currently on the roster, five will graduate this spring. University personnel will meet with students individually to determine their next steps in regard to their academic and athletic journeys.
What is the process for student-athletes to enter the transfer portal?
Current student-athletes with eligibility remaining have the option to enter the transfer portal, and the department will assist them in their search for a new program. Even though the transfer portal window for tennis does not begin until May 4, students are permitted to enter the transfer portal immediately due to the discontinuation of sport exception.
What happens to the current coaches?
The full-time head coach and part-time assistant coach positions are being eliminated.
How will alumni of the tennis program be classified by SLU?
Tennis alumni will always be recognized and celebrated as Billiken alumni and former student-athletes. They will remain eligible for all honors and awards afforded to all former Billiken student-athletes.
Is there a minimum number of programs SLU must sponsor to remain in NCAA Division I?
Yes. Institutions like SLU are required to sponsor at least 14 Division I programs. Following this change, SLU will continue to sponsor 16 programs.
When was the last time SLU discontinued a sport?
Men's and women's golf were discontinued following the 2006 season.
Does the Athletics Department plan to discontinue any additional programs?
No. There are no plans to discontinue any other programs at this time.
Is it possible to fundraise to save the program?
No. The decision has been finalized.
