30TH ANNIVERSARY SPOTLIGHT: Kelly Young

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Saint Louis University's inaugural women's soccer season. As part of the recognition of this milestone, SLUBillikens.com is highlighting the program's 11 (eight individuals and three teams) Billiken Hall of Fame inductees.

This week's featured Hall of Famer is Kelly Young, who was inducted in 2007 as both the first individual honoree from SLU women's soccer and as part of the 1999 Conference USA regular-season champions.

She joined the program as a walk-on in 1997, but when her playing career ended, Kelly Young left Saint Louis University with a collection of accolades that made her destined to become the first women's soccer player inducted into the Billiken Hall of Fame.

Young started the last 11 games of her freshman season after contributing off the bench in the first eight contests. She was the Billikens' sweeper as play began in 1998 and became a fixture, occupying the position in SLU's first XI in all 59 games she played over her final three years.

In 1999, Young led a defensive unit that ranked eighth nationally in goals against average as the Billikens (14-3-3 overall, 8-1-2 C-USA) captured their first league title and the University's first outright Conference USA regular-season crown. In Young's senior campaign, Saint Louis posted records of 13-5-3 overall and 8-0-3 in conference play while finishing 14th nationally in GAA.

In addition to leading the backline, Young contributed three goals and 11 assists during her career. She earned NSCAA All-Region plaudits twice, including the program's initial first-team nod in 1999, and was a C-USA first-team selection in 1999 and 2000. Also a standout in the classroom, Young became the first Billiken to claim NSCAA Scholar All-America honors when she was named to the third team in 2000. She was a first-team NSCAA All-Region Scholar-Athlete in 1999 and 2000.

Young returned to Saint Louis in 2003 to begin a four-year stint as assistant coach. She helped guide the Billikens to Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season and tournament championships in 2005, another A-10 tourney title in 2006 and an NCAA Championship first-round victory in each of those seasons.

Young was selected to SLU's All-Decade Team in 2005 and to the program's 25th Anniversary Team in 2021. She was inducted into the Billiken Hall of Fame in 2007.
