Late Goal Lifts No. 14 Akron Past Billikens, 2-1

ST. LOUIS – No. 14 Akron rallied for two unanswered goals, including the game-winning score in the 85th minute, in a 2-1 Zips victory Saturday night at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

The Billikens fall to 2-3-1 on the season, while Akron remains unbeaten at 4-0-1.

Saint Louis grabbed the lead in the 23rd minute when Theo Franca finished a pass from Andrew Heckenlaible for his second goal of the season. 

Akron answered before halftime, with Noa Testa scoring in the 39th minute off an assist from Farrel Ngongang to send the teams into the break tied at 1-1.

The Zips then found the decisive goal with just over five minutes remaining. Jack Roman scored in the 85th minute on an assist from Thomas O'Rourke to give Akron its first lead of the night.

Saint Louis had a chance to equalize moments later when Tanner Anderson was awarded a penalty kick with 40 seconds remaining. Akron goalkeeper Brett Kaminski made the save, however, preserving the Zips' 2-1 victory.

The Billikens finished with a 9-5 advantage in shots and put three attempts on target. Akron had three shots on goal. Both teams recorded three corner kicks.

SLU returns to acton Saturday, Sept. 19, for the start of Atlantic 10 Conference play when it travels to Dayton. Game time is 6 p.m. CT.
