The 2020-21 season is graduate assistant and former Billiken swimmer Gavin Hagar’s third campaign on head coach Jim Halliburton’s staff. It also is his 22nd year overall in the sport of swimming and his sixth year of coaching for the local Parkway Swim Club.
Hagar began swimming competitively at age 5 in Omaha, Nebraska, and he achieved AAA and sectional times throughout his career as a 14-and-under. He attended Creighton Prep High School in Omaha, where he was a four-year member of the state championship swim team. Hagar came to Saint Louis as a freshman in 2011 and competed through his senior year. Throughout his time as a swimmer and coach, he has achieved countless personal goals and, more importantly, developed relationships that will last a lifetime.
As a coach, Hagar prioritizes the detail of stroke-technique and his relationships with swimmers by maintaining an open and honest dialogue. Having experienced the SLU swim program himself, he shares in the athletic department’s mission to better the student-athletes as men and women, allowing them to succeed both in and out of the pool.
