Carlos Tofern joined the Saint Louis men's soccer staff in the summer of 2023 as an assistant coach. A former Billiken standout, Tofern works primarily with the Saint Louis goalkeepers.

Since joining the coaching staff, Tofern has helped guide the Billikens to back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances, including a return to the NCAA Men's College Cup in 2025.

As goalkeeper coach, Tofern has overseen the coaching and development of one of the top goalkeepers in the country and in school history in Jeremi Abonnel. Under Tofern's guidance, Abonnel earned Atlantic 10 Goalkeeper of the Year honors in both 2024 and 2025, becoming one of the most decorated goalkeepers in program history. In 2025, Abonnel garnered third-team All-America recognition after helping lead the Billikens to the NCAA Men's College Cup for the first time since 1997.

The 2025 season marked one of the finest campaigns in school history. Saint Louis finished 13-3-8, captured both the Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships, and advanced to the NCAA Men's College Cup. The Billikens concluded the season ranked No. 4 in the final United Soccer Coaches poll after making the program's NCAA-record 52nd NCAA Tournament appearance.

In 2024, Tofern mentored Abonnel to Atlantic 10 Goalkeeper of the Year and first-team All-Conference honors while helping the Billikens earn an NCAA Championship berth.

Tofern played the 2022 season with the Billikens and helped Saint Louis capture Atlantic 10 regular-season and tournament championships. He started 17 matches in goal, compiling an 11-3-3 record and a 0.87 goals-against average.

During the 2022 A-10 Men's Soccer Championship, Tofern registered six saves on eight penalty-kick attempts across the semifinal and championship matches. He was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player for his efforts.

Prior to arriving at Saint Louis, Tofern spent two seasons at the University of Bridgeport, where he earned conference Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2019. From 2020-22, he played at Albany and ranked among the America East Conference's top goalkeepers.
