Saint Louis University women's soccer posted a 6-0 win over Drury in the season opener tonight at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The Billikens outshot the Panthers 26-1 as sophomore Megan McNiff (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu) recorded a pair of goals in the victory.
The Billikens were aggressive early as sophomore Shannon Myers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) scored on a header from six yards out in the sixth minute. Kathy Musschoot (Chicago, Ill./Barrington) played the ball in on a corner and Myers connected from the right side.. Saint Louis earned nine corner kicks in the match and scored on three of them.
Musschoot went on to assist on both of McNiff's goals, the first coming in the 11th minute off a corner kick. Junior back Melissa Gossman (Leawood, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored on a blast from 40 yards out to put the Bills up 3-0. Sophomore Jenny Kehl (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) tallied her first goal of the season in the 27th minute.
McNiff and Beth Moberg (Leawood, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored in the second half. Moberg's strike coming off a penalty kick after freshman Anne Lucier (Dallas, Texas/Ursuline) was taken down in the box.
Defensively, the Bills were solid. The Panthers took just one shot which did not require a save from sophomore keeper Meghann Burke(St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) as she recorded her first shutout of the season.
The Billikens are back in action on Sun., Aug. 27, at 1 p.m., against Creighton.
