Billikens Play No. 14 Marquette to Scoreless Tie

Oct. 13, 2002

Final Stats

St. Louis - Saint Louis and No. 14 Marquette played to a scoreless draw this afternoon in a Conference USA women's soccer match at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken keeper Meghann Burke recorded her ninth shutout of the season.

In an evenly-played first half, each team managed six shots. Marquette had two solid opportunities within one minute's time as Carolyn Klopp's 20-yard shot was knocked down by the Billiken defense, and Burke came up with Golden Eagles forward Kate Gordon's shot moments later.

Senior midfielder Katie Zaegel had the Billikens' best first half chance, but her 15 yard shot from the right flank sailed wide of the near post. The Billikens put a number of dangerous crosses into the Eagles' penalty area, but Marquette keeper Ashley Koenig cleaned up everything in strong fashion.

Burke made the save of the day on MU's Gordon in the 53rd minute. Burke reached back to her left while moving to her right to snag Gordon's 10-yard header. Although Marquette had a territorial advantage in the second half and out-shot the Bills 14-5, Burke wasn't tested severely outside of Gordon's chance.

Billiken defender Carrie Carlson kept Marquette off the board in the 79th minute. With Burke on the ground and out of the play, Carlson cleared Eagles midfielder Anna Frisk's four-yard shot off the SLU line.

On only its second shot of the second half, Billiken senior forward Jenny Kehl tested MU's Koenig from eight yards to the right post, but the Eagles' keeper came up with the low shot. SLU forward Jamie Perry got past the Marquette defense on Kelly Ferguson's through ball in the 87th minute, but her 18-yard bending drive was just wide of the left post. Perry struck a corner as regulation time was running out, but Kehl's deflection at the near post was routinely handled by MU's Koenig.

Koenig denied Saint Louis the victory in the opening minute of overtime. Kehl sent Perry in on a breakaway, but the Eagles' keeper came up with the save.

In the opening minute of the second overtime, Marquette senior forward Ashley Spakowitz sent a 12-yard header high. In the 103rd minute, MU junior midfielder Laura Culhane ripped a 20-yard drive wide of the right post. Koenig handled Perry's shot directly off her corner kick in the 109th minute.

Marquette (9-3-2 overall, 3-1-2 C-USA) out-shot the Billikens 20-11 and set a Hermann Stadium record for shots by an opponent. Burke made 10 saves, and her defense came up with three more stops. The 13 saves was a Billiken school record. MU's Koenig made eight saves.

The Billikens (10-3-1 overall, 4-1-1) host Western Illinois on Fri., Oct. 18, at 7 p.m.
