Billikens Swamp WIU, 1-0

Oct. 18, 2002

Final Stats

St. Louis - Saint Louis slogged its way past Western Illinois 1-0 tonight in a non-conference women's soccer match at rain-swept Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Billiken freshman midfielder Kelly Ferguson netted the winner, while keeper Meghann Burke recorded her school record-tying 10th shutout of the season.

Despite periodic heavy downpours, the Billikens continually pressured the Westerwinds and sent a variety of dangerous crosses through the WIU penalty area, but couldn't connect in the first half. The Billikens out-shot the Westerwinds 13-1 in the first half and had a 6-0 edge on corner kicks. WIU goalkeeper Carey Cowhey made seven fairly routine saves.

After a brief respite from the rain at the start of the second half, the Billikens continued to press the attack as the steady, hard rain resumed. SLU freshman midfielder Kelly Ferguson broke the deadlock in the 59th minute with a 12-yard volley off a WIU clearance.

The Billikens out-shot the Westerwinds 28-1 as Western Illinois (1-11-1) lost its fifth straight match. The Billikens' 28 shots set a Hermann Stadium record as did their 18 corner kicks. WIU's Cowhey also set a stadium record with 14 saves.

The Billikens (11-3-1 overall, 4-1-1) return to Conference USA action by hosting East Carolina on Sun., Oct. 20, at 1 p.m.
