St. Louis -
East Carolina slipped past Saint Louis 2-1 on a controversial goal in a Conference USA women's soccer match this afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Pirates freshman midfielder Rachelle Cabaceiras was credited with the winner at 73:17.
With the match tied 1-1, East Carolina reclaimed the lead in the 74th minute on a hotly disputed goal. Off an ECU corner, the Billiken defense popped the ball into the air directly in front of the SLU goal. Pirates freshman midfielder Rachelle Cabaceiras sent a header back toward the goalmouth, and the shot seemingly was cleared off the line by the SLU defense. However, the far side linesman ruled the shot as a goal.
The Billikens continued to bid to tie it a second time. Sophomore forward Jamie Perry's 12-yard shot was stopped by ECU keeper Michelle Kmiotek in the 83rd minute. Junior midfielder Anny Lucier sent a drive over the cross bar in the 87th minute. With just over a minute to play, Perry seemed to have a clear shot from 16 yards, but was tripped by an ECU defender before getting off the shot. No foul was called to the dismay of the SLU bench.
Billiken senior forward Jenny Kehl set up the dramatics by knotting the match in the 67th minute. After collecting Megan McNiff's long pass at the right side of the ECU penalty area, Kehl rolled a shot from 12-yards to the left post past Kmiotek who was charging out to cut down the angle.
The Billikens out-shot the Pirates 6-3 in the first half and had the better of the opportunities. In the 16th minute, Kehl tracked down a long ball and sent a 10-yard shot over the cross bar.
Lucier was the most dangerous player on the field in the first half with a pair of chances. She sent a 28-yard blast sailing over the cross bar in the 20th minute. With her back to near post, Lucier sent a bouncing ball back over her head to the far post where ECU's Kmiotek leaped to knock it away with her left hand. In the 34th minute, junior forward Lindsay Potrafke was free in the ECU penalty area off a SLU throw-in, but put a 12-yard shot directly at Kmiotek, who handled it routinely.
On only its third shot of the half, ECU grabbed the lead at 37:01 on senior forward Amanda Duffy's six-yard header. Junior midfielder Mindy Nixon sent a cross into the Bills' penalty area, and Duffy out-jumped two SLU defenders to get her head on the ball and pop it over Billiken keeper Meghann Burke. ECU carried the lead to the break.
The Billikens came out of the half and turned up the heat by getting the first four shots of the half. Perry's eight-yard shot off a throw-in was stopped by ECU's Kmiotek in the 50th minute, and Perry was high from 20 yards on a free kick in the 54th minute.
Burke kept the Billikens in the match in the 56th minute by making a sprawling save on Krystel Pahey's 15-yard shot after the Pirates' sophomore midfielder danced around a pair of SLU defenders.
Saint Louis out-shot the Pirates (8-4-2, 4-2-1) 14-6 as ECU's Kmiotek came up with six saves. SLU's Burke made one stop. The Billikens (11-4-1 overall, 4-2-1) continue C-USA play on Fri., Oct. 25, with a date at Louisville.
