Final Stats
CINCINNATI -
Saint Louis University women's soccer knocked off Cincinnati 2-0 this afternoon at Meyers Field. Senior midfielder Mandy Trokey scored the game winner in the fifth minute and assisted on Jamie Perry's school-record 12th goal of the season to put the game away in the 72nd minute. The Bearcats, previously unbeaten in Conference USA action, outshot the Billikens 10-6, but could not get by SLU goalkeeper Meghann Burke.
The Billikens had the better of play in the first half, despite being outshot 7-4. Saint Louis got on the board with the first shot of the game. Junior Anny Lucier's long throw-in skipped across a UC defender before it found Trokey deep inside the box. The midfielder collected the ball at her feet and pushed it just inside the left post.
The Bearcats did not get off their first shot until the 27th minute when Amy Simonson sent one sailing over the cross bar. By that time the Billikens had forced UC keeper Tracy Hale into two saves on blasts from Carrie Carlson and Lucier. UC's quality of chances improved later in the half. After Burke made a pair of nice saves, UC's best opportunity came with just under two minutes left in the half. The Bearcats' Lisa Stephens dribbled through the Billiken defense and rifled a shot from 30 yards out that rang off the crossbar.
The Billikens were largely defensive in the second half as the Bearcats came out aggressively. The Billiken defense, quarterbacked by sophomore sweeper Tressa Pecher was steady amid the pressure. Burke needed just two saves to post her 12th shutout of the season.
Midway through the second half, the Billikens took the opportunity to get offensive as Lucier collected a ball in the midfield and sent it ahead to Jenny Kehl. The senior midfielder tracked the ball out to the left side of the goal and sent it back up the line to Trokey. Already with a goal earlier in the day, Trokey served an arcing ball into the middle of the box where Perry flicked it to the far post past Hale.
With the victory, Saint Louis ended Cincinnati's 23-game unbeaten streak in C-USA regular-season action. The streak dated back to Oct. 1, 2000, when the Billikens claimed a 4-0 victory in St. Louis.
Saint Louis (13-4-1, 6-2-1 C-USA) plays its final regular-season game on Fri., Nov. 1, when nationally-ranked Charlotte visits Robert R. Hermann Stadium at 7 p.m.
