TUCSON, Ariz. -
Saint Louis University women's soccer claimed a 1-0 decision over Idaho State this evening in the first game of the University of Arizona Tournament. Sophomore Jamie Perry picked up the game winner in the game's third minute to support the shutout goalkeeping of senior Meghann Burke.
The Billikens were on the board quickly with Perry's goal in the third minute. Jenny Kehl stripped the ball on the left side and fed a through ball to Perry streaking up the middle. Taking the ball in stride around the top of the box, Perry took on and beat advancing ISU keeper Shannon Boyle, then put the ball in the resulting open net.
The Bengals went on the attack after giving up the early goal and forced Burke into five saves in the half. The first save was the most dramatic as ISU's Heather Hunt caught Burke off her line, forcing her to tip the ball just wide enough to hit the left post and bounce harmlessly out of play. Three minutes later as the Billikens battled the blinding sun on an ISU corner, Shawna Park collected the ball after a scramble and took Burke to her left again for the save.
While Idaho State seemed to generate more pressure than the Billikens in the second half, SLU allowed just three shots as each team finished the game with eight attempts at the goal. Saint Louis advanced toward the ISU goal dangerously late in the game, but Boyle was up to the task.
The Billikens face the winner of the tournament's second game between Youngstown State and host Arizona on Sun., Oct. 6, at 2 p.m.
