Final Stats

CHARLOTTE - Saint Louis University women's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision to Marquette in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament tonight at Transamerica Field. The Golden Eagles netted the game winner on a penalty kick in the 103rd minute.

The winning strike came after forward Kate Gordon was on a breakaway with a pair of Billiken defenders tracking her. SLU goalkeeper Meghann Burke attacked the ball and appeared to have stopped Gordon's shot. The referee determined that a foul had occurred before the shot and awarded the PK.

The Golden Eagles were on the board first with a strike in the 17th minute. Probing the Billiken defense a few times to no avail, Carolyn Klopp collected the ball and sent it across the box to Anna Frisk in the upper left corner of the penalty area. Klopp settled the ball and lifted a ball over SLU goalkeeper Meghann Burke, who was advancing toward her, and just under the cross bar.

Saint Louis evened the match in the 34th minute on Christie Cigno's strike. Marquette's attempt to clear the ball out of their box was intercepted by Kelly Ferguson. The freshman midfielder sent the ball to the right side for an attacking Carrie Carlson who lifted a served into the middle of the box for Cigno to side volley just inside the left post.

The Golden Eagles had the better of play in the second half with their most dangerous opportunities coming in the 57th minute. Off a corner, there was a flurry of activity right in front of the Billikens' goal. Ashley Spakowitz sent Burke diving to her right for a save. Anne Dalecky had her follow-up shot stopped by a Billiken defender standing on the goal line.

The Billikens, who were ranked 25th by Soccer America this week, fall to 13-6-1 overall, while Marquette improves to 12-6-3.
