Women's Soccer Blanks Drury in Opener

Aug. 30, 2002

Final Stats

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University women's soccer kicked off its regular season with a 3-0 win over Drury before 988 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium tonight. Billiken sophomore forward Jamie Perry (St. Louis, Mo./Rockwood Summit) recorded the hat trick and senior goalkeeper Meghann Burke (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) needed just two saves to seal the shutout.

The Billikens played a majority of the game in their offensive third, out-shooting the Panthers 8-0 in the first half alone. Drury keeper Jennie Grib notched five saves in the opening stanza, but could not deny Perry in the 26th minute. The play began in the midfield with senior Jenny Kehl corralling the ball on the left side and changing field to feed senior Katie Zaegel streaking up the near side. Zaegel tracked the ball to near the end line and served it across to Perry, who headed it just inside the post.

Perry was back on the attack early in the second half, again hooking up with Kehl. The Panthers had sustained a Billiken advance near the box and looked to be clearing out of their end when Kehl tangled with a defender and gained control of the ball on the right side. Her pass expertly led Perry into the box where Grib was advancing on the ball. Perry evaded the keeper and put the ball into the lower left corner in the 50th minute.

The final piece of the hat trick came courtesy of another one-on-one with Grib. Junior Anny Lucier won the ball in the midfield and struck a through ball to Perry running of the right flank. Carrying the ball into the goal box, she rifled a shot past Grib to the lower left.

In the game, the Billikens outshot the Panthers 17-3 and had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Drury saw Saint Louis go 13 deep on the bench and dealt constantly with fresh legs on the field.

Saint Louis travels to Nashville, Tenn., to take on Vanderbilt on Sun., Sept. 1, at 1 p.m.
